ResoSummit Welcomes Dave Giegerich to the 2008 ResoSummit Faculty
We promised Cindy Cashdollar that we would find a replacement for her if her touring schedule required it, and that turns out to be the case. We had a blast with Cindy at ResoSummit last year and are hopeful that she'll be able to join us again in future years. But in the "silver lining" department, we are delighted to announce the addition of DAVE GIEGERICH to our 2008 faculty.
Dave has been playing and teaching resophonic guitar for over 30 years. He started with bluegrass and has added a variety of styles such as swing, Hawaiian, country and blues to his repertoire. He is the leader of The Hula Monsters, a 5 piece band that plays all of the above styles. A partial list of other artists Dave has performed or recorded with includes Bill Harrell, Eva Cassidy, Bill Kirchen, Johnny Gimble, Robin & Linda Williams, John Starling, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Commander Cody, Mac Wiseman, Greg Kihn, Cracker, Bobby Hicks and Jimmy Arnold. He has taught private lessons at stores such as Elderly Instruments and Appalachian Bluegrass and teaches workshops at music camps including Common Ground, Augusta and Ashoken. An active performer on both resophonic and steel guitar, Dave will play over 150 gigs this year with more than 15 different bands, and in the past has performed at venues such as The Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, The Birchmere, Lincoln Center, Mountain Stage, The 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Bean Blossom and many other bluegrass festivals.
~~~WAIT LIST UPDATE~~~
We are no longer adding to the Wait List for ResoSummit 2008; it is gargantuan. If you are on the wait list, don't give up: we do get cancellations and will be confirming people from the wait list (and a quite a few of you have already made it), so take heart!
If you would like to participate in a future ResoSummit, please sign up for the email list, below. "First Call" for registration goes out by email to Rob Ickes' email list in January. We sold out very quickly this year from that First Call notice. So if you wait for the public announcement, it may be too late.
While we were at IBMA this week, we worked out lots of details with respect to our schedule, and here's one we want to share right away, because it may affect your travel plans: the JERRY DOUGLAS MASTER CLASS will take place on Sunday, Nov. 16 from 1-3pm. Also, we will post info as soon as it becomes available, but there is a possibility of a reso-related (non-ResoSummit) event on Sunday night that may well affect your plans as to whether you want to stay over on Sunday night or not. That's the biggest hint we can drop for now, and we'll post more info as soon as it is available.
We will be sending out the participant survey in just a few days, with the first round of workshop info, and a survey to allow you to sign up for optional things such as meals, "friends and family" tickets, t-shirts, etc.
|
Where is the registration form?
There isn't one; ResoSummit '08 is sold out, and registration occurred by an on-line survey form. We are no longer adding to the wait list (click here for a wait list update).
When will we sign up for workshops?
Workshop signup will take place in early October, so that we will have enough lead time to get all the crazy intricacies of the schedule in place and confirmed to you in advance. And in a novel approach for '08, your program book, complete with instructors' tab and blank tab paper, will be in your goody bag at registration.
What about meals, t-shirts, and friends & family tickets for the concerts?
Since we have to place our meal orders in advance, we will be asking you to pre-order meals; you'll receive a survey shortly for this purpose. At that time, you can also order t-shirts, and any tickets you may want for friends & family for the evening concerts — your own tickets for all concerts are included as part of your registration fee. Last year's post-event surveys generally agree that on-site meals are not likely to be featured in Gourmet Magazine, but they are a quick and inexpensive option, served in a beautiful dining hall. There are many restaurants, both fast-food and otherwise, within a several-block radius of S-B, and you'll have time to eat off-site if you prefer. Morning coffee & tea, but no meals, are included as part of your registration.
Details on the concerts?
ResoSummit 2008 will kick off on Thursday night with a performance by BLUE HIGHWAY at The Station Inn. By popular demand (yes, we read your post-event surveys!), all Station Inn ResoSummit performances will begin at 8:00 pm. (This should allow more participants to enjoy our after-hours jamming spaces). Friday's performance is by GRASSTOWNE. The Saturday performance will be announced shortly.
On Sunday, our closing performance will be at 5:00 pm in the Harambee Auditorium at Scarritt-Bennett, featuring ROB ICKES & FRIENDS, including jazz pianist MICHAEL ALVEY and other special guests.
After-hours jamming?
As we did last year, we will have after-hours jamming space available in Fondren Hall. (Hey, there are at least 5 separate spaces up there, so no need to do one big 30-dobro jam!) Also, by popular demand, we have arranged for exclusive ResoSummit use of Bragg Hall, a standard-room residence hall, so that after-hours jamming can take place there. Gibson, the upgraded-room residence hall, will continue to be a late-hours quiet zone. Keep in mind that if you have friends in the Nashville area who play other instruments, you are encouraged to invite them for after-hours jamming in Fondren.
When is check-in time? Can I get on-site lodging for Wednesday night? When is ResoSummit registration?
Check-in time for on-site guest rooms is at 3pm on Thursday in the lobby of the Laskey Building, Scarritt-Bennett (go here for a campus map). We will have a registration table in Laskey for check-in by all participants, whether staying on-site or not. Wednesday night lodging is not available through ResoSummit for Wednesday night. Our block of rooms covers Thursday through Sunday nights, with Sunday night being optional for people whose flights leave on Monday, or otherwise just can't quite tear themselves away on Sunday.
When does ResoSummit begin? When does it end?
The first "official" ResoSummit event is the Blue Highway performance at 8pm on Thursday, Nov. 13 at the Station Inn. We will have an informal "get acquainted" dinner in the Susie Gray Dining Hall at Scarritt-Bennett beginning approx. 5:30pm, so that you can make new friends and catch up with old ones, and we'll also arrange informal car pools to the Station Inn after dinner. The last official event of ResoSummit is the late afternoon performance by Rob Ickes & special guests Michael Alvey and Robinella, and that is scheduled to end by 6:00pm.
Speaking of car pools, do I need a car at ResoSummit?
You should be fine without one. Last year's participants car-pooled to the Station Inn performances, and we'll facilitate those again this year. Information on getting to and from the airport is at right.
What is the policy with respect to audio or video recording?
Audio-only recording of instructional workshops will be permitted for your personal use only, subject to these conditions: 1) workshop faculty have the right to impose a no-recording policy for any given workshop, in their sole discretion; 2) all recording must be nondisruptive (see below); and 3) recordings are for your personal use only. You may not distribute copies of your personal recordings to others, or make them available for streaming, downloading, or share them in any other way. "Nondisruptive" means: do not ask the instructor to wait or start something over or play something again, or otherwise do anything that facilitates your recording but affects the flow of the workshop or annoys your fellow workshop participants. ResoSummit is intended to be a live experience, so please make sure that any audio recording you do is completely consistent with this policy.
No recording, audio or audiovisual, is allowed of the Station Inn performances, or the performances in the opening session on Friday morning.
Noncompliance with this policy may cause you to lose your audiorecording privileges for the duration of the event, and may affect your eligibility to attend future ResoSummit events. (Note: ResoSummit may videorecord some activities for archival or other purposes.)
I read all the way to the end, and you didn't answer my question - what's up with that? Oops, our bad. Send us an email with your question and we'll answer it, and we'll post the Q&A here, too, if it's of general interest.
Housing Info for 2008 Registrants:
ON-SITE:
On-site housing is optional. A standard room (one twin bed, shared bath, no TV or Internet access) is $55/night (all taxes/fees included), and an upgraded room (one twin bed, shared bath, TV and high-speed Internet access by cable) is $75/night (all taxes/fees included). S-B has a limited number of doubles; they have all been assigned. Please note that on-site housing is handled by us, and not directly by S-B, so contact us if you have housing questions.
To see comments about on-site housing from ResoSummit 2007 participants, go here.
If you are staying on-site, you do not need to bring linens or towels. S-B rooms used to be dorm rooms, but they are more like hotel rooms now. Though they do not have maid service during your stay, you can get fresh towels, etc. at the Laskey desk at any time.
Please note that Scarritt-Bennett is a non-smoking facility, and it also has a no-alcohol policy. There are restaurants and clubs nearby that serve alcohol, and we'll be at The Station Inn for evening concerts. Please opt for other housing if you do not wish to abide by the S-B policy with respect to alcohol on their premises (and thanks for not jeopardizing our relationship with our venue!).
